Science Lead

Miss Garrett

At Shefford Lower School, our Science curriculum plays an important role in nurturing children’s curiosity and encourages them to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop a deeper understanding of the world. We also use every opportunity to promote compassion, respect, and responsibility for living things, sustainability and the environment through our learning.

During their time at Shefford Lower School, pupils develop key scientific knowledge through carefully planned units of learning. They progressively build their scientific vocabulary, deepen their understanding of important concepts, and develop the skills needed to work and think like scientists.

Throughout the curriculum, pupils are regularly given opportunities to revisit and build upon their prior knowledge, vocabulary, and skills before new learning is introduced. This ensures that knowledge develops progressively, enabling pupils to embed core concepts and make meaningful connections across their science learning.
Children’s working scientifically skills are developed and strengthened over time, with pupils learning how to ask questions, carry out investigations, and draw conclusions from evidence. These skills are closely linked with Mathematics, particularly in the use of data and statistics, helping pupils understand how evidence can be used to support or challenge scientific ideas.
“The important thing is to never stop questioning.”
Albert Einstein
