At Shefford Lower school, we want families to feel confident that uniform choices are affordable and flexible. There is no requirement to purchase branded uniform items with the school logo. As long as clothing follows our agreed school colours and style guidelines, plain items are perfectly acceptable. Many clothing shops and supermarkets stock suitable options in the correct colours throughout the year, often at very reasonable prices.
This approach allows families to choose what works best for them while still maintaining a smart and consistent appearance across the school.
Uniform
Parents are asked to send their children to school clean, tidy and appropriately dressed. The school uniform was consulted as part of the schools for the future consultations in 2020. There is a change from red to green as a result.
A two and a half year ‘lead in’ was agreed to support cost of living for families. This policy was brought again to the Parent Forum in 2024 with a survey sent to all parents.
Our uniform will no longer contain the name of our school to support the safeguarding of our pupils when they are out in public.
Our school does not have a compulsory summer or winter uniform. However, we recommend certain clothing during the colder months to ensure pupils stay warm and comfortable.
The school uniform consists of:
Grey skirt, pinafore dress, trousers, or shorts
Green or white polo shirt
Green jumper or cardigan
Black school shoes (not trainers)
Plain black, white, or grey socks or tights
All pupils should keep a pair of wellies in school to support our OPAL playtimes.
An optional green fleece can be worn in the colder months.
During the summer months, pupils may wear green and white checked dresses, knee-length shorts, or grey pinafore dresses. Dresses should be worn with black shorts underneath.
This support is available to parents and carers who meet the eligibility criteria for Free School Meals.
No child will be challenged for non-compliance with the uniform policy where this relates to their cultural, racial, or religious dress requirements. We also consider reasonable adjustments for children with SEND.

The PSA:
Our wonderful Shefford Lower School Parent and Staff Association (PSA) runs a great second-hand uniform service, offering good quality pre-loved school uniform items at accessible prices.
All profits go directly back into supporting school projects and experiences for our children.
A uniform rack is located in the reception area where families can browse and purchase items throughout the year — perfect for finding everyday pieces without needing to buy new.
The PSA keeps the stock fresh and well-organised, making it easy to find jumpers, polo shirts, and other uniform items in a range of sizes. Buying pre-loved uniform not only helps families save money but also supports sustainability by giving these items a new lease of life.
You can keep up with the PSA’s activities and announcements on their Facebook page.
Children should come to school in suitable mufti clothing that is appropriate for an outdoor environment and covers their arms and legs. Clothing should be comfortable, practical and suitable for getting muddy. We recommend:
Long-sleeved tops
Full-length trousers
Warm layers in colder weather
Waterproof coat
Wellies or sturdy outdoor shoes
As Forest School takes place in most weather conditions, please ensure children are dressed appropriately for the forecast. In colder months, hats and gloves are advisable; in warmer weather, lightweight long sleeves are recommended for protection.
If additional items need to be sent into school, we suggest providing them in a clearly named drawstring bag.
Forest School can be muddy, wet and wonderfully messy — please avoid sending children in their best clothes.
