Maths

Subject Leader-  Miss McIntyre

At Shefford Lower School, we believe that all children can succeed in Mathematics. We deliver high-quality, engaging lessons that enable every pupil to:

  •  Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, recalling and applying knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry and explaining their thinking
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a range of contexts

We follow a mastery-based curriculum that helps children understand why mathematics works, not just how to complete a procedure. Mastery in Mathematics means pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of key concepts so that they can apply their knowledge confidently in unfamiliar situations.

Children are given regular opportunities to deepen their understanding and make connections between Mathematical ideas. Through this approach, they begin to recognise patterns and relationships in both number and space, helping them see the relevance of Mathematics in everyday life.

Throughout the school, Mathematical reasoning is carefully modelled and encouraged. Pupils learn to follow lines of enquiry, develop arguments, and justify their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary whilst developing their fluency with number. This supports children in expressing their ideas clearly and confidently when talking about mathematics.

Pure Mathematics, is in its own way, the poetry of logical ideas.
