Communication Champions

Early Years Communication Champions are passionate about children’s early speech, language, and communication. Trained by Bedfordshire and Luton speech and language therapists, Early Years Communication Champions support pre-school aged children (Nursery & Reception) and their families to develop these skills, share knowledge with Teachers and TAs and promote speech, language & communication development as part of the Shefford Lower School’s growing Early Years Communication Champion team and wider school Communication Champion Team.

Early Communication Champions:

· Identify pre-school children with early speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)

· Develop activities and strategies to help pre-school children’s communication and language skills and bring the best practice approach for communication and language

· Recognise when further support is needed and know how to support referrals for specialist support

· Promote speech, language, and communication development for all children in Early Years setting

· Share and implement knowledge, skills, and tools with other members of staff as a point of contact for SLCN

· Keep up to date with their knowledge of speech, language, and communication

· Liaise with speech and language therapists including link practitioner/therapist

· Promote strategies and tips for families to champion speech, language, and communication.
