Child Exploitation
Every child can be at risk of exploitation — at any age, at any time, and in any place.
What is Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)?
Child Sexual Exploitation is a form of abuse where a child is manipulated, pressured, or forced into sexual activity. This may happen in exchange for things such as money, gifts, attention, status, or affection.
What is Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE)?
Child Criminal Exploitation is when a child is manipulated or pressured into committing crimes. This may include activities such as drug running, theft, carrying money or items, or being forced to work.
Signs parents and carers may notice
Parents and carers are often the first to realise something is not right. Trust your instincts and speak to your child if you are worried.
You may notice:
-
A new boyfriend, girlfriend, or friends (including adults) that you don’t know
-
Receiving gifts, money, jewellery, or an extra mobile phone
-
Missing from home, staying out overnight, or missing school
-
Being picked up or dropped off by people you do not recognise
-
Being secretive about where they are going or who they are seeing
-
Talking to people online that they have never met in person
-
Spending lots of time online and you are unsure what they are accessing
-
Regular alcohol or drug use
Look, listen, ask questions, and keep the conversation going. Being curious and supportive can make a real difference.
