Art & Design

Subject Leader-  Mrs Fisher

The Art & Design curriculum at Shefford Lower School enables children to express themselves creatively, build a progression of skills and techniques, and develop an appreciation for art to understand how it can reflect the world around them.

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our in-house Art Gallery exhibits artworks from all around the world and throughout history. This ensures that all children have the opportunity to access and appreciate art across a wide range of cultures and in all areas of the curriculum.

Art Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.”

 Quentin Blake, Children’s Laureate.

 Art Vote

Each month, our school will hold an Art Vote where every child has the opportunity to take part. Students will be shown two different pieces of artwork and asked to vote for the one they prefer. As well as voting, children will also be encouraged to share their thoughts and feedback about the artworks, explaining what they like, how the art makes them feel, and why they chose their favourite.

This activity helps students develop their appreciation for art, practise expressing their opinions, and learn how to respectfully listen to the views of others. Over time, the Art Vote will encourage creativity, critical thinking, and a stronger connection to the arts across the whole school.
